چکیده

A qualitative account of the occurrence and magnitude of superconductivity in the transition metals is presented, with a primary emphasis on elements of the first row. Correlations of the important parameters of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity are highlighted with respect to the number of d-shell electrons per atom of the transition elements. The relation between the systematics of superconductivity in the transition metals and the periodic table high-lights the importance of short-range or chemical bonding on the remarkable natural phenomenon of superconductivity in the chemical elements. A relationship between superconductivity and lattice instability appears naturally as a balance and competition between localized covalent bonding and so-called broken covalency, which favours d-electron delocalization and superconductivity. In this manner, the systematics of superconductivity and various other physical properties of the transition elements are related and unified.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in Sc to 74 GPa

Using a diamond-anvil cell with nearly hydrostatic helium pressure medium, we have significantly extended the superconducting phase diagram Tc P of Sc, the lightest of all transition metals. We find that superconductivity is induced in Sc under pressure, Tc increasing monotonically to 8.2 K at 74.2 GPa. The Tc P dependences of the trivalent d-electron metals Sc, Y, La, and Lu are compared and d...

7 J un 1 99 9 p - wave and d - wave superconductivity in quasi - 2 D metals

We compare predictions of the mean-field theory of superconductivity for nearly antiferromagnetic and nearly ferromagnetic metals in two dimensions. The calculations are based on a parametrization of the effective interaction arising from the exchange of magnetic fluctuations. The Eliashberg equations for the transition temperature are solved including the full momentum dependence of the electr...

Gate Tuning of Electronic Phase Transitions in Two-Dimensional NbSe_{2}.

Recent experimental advances in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) metals have unveiled a range of interesting phenomena including the coexistence of charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity down to the monolayer limit. The atomic thickness of two-dimensional (2D) TMD metals also opens up the possibility for control of these electronic phase transitions by electr...

Fluctuations in a superconducting quantum critical point of multi-band metals.

In multi-band metals quasi-particles arising from different atomic orbitals coexist at a common Fermi surface. Superconductivity in these materials may appear due to interactions within a band (intra-band) or among the distinct metallic bands (inter-band). Here we consider the suppression of superconductivity in the intra-band case due to hybridization. The fluctuations at the superconducting q...

Intercalant-independent transition temperature in superconducting black phosphorus

Research on black phosphorus has been experiencing a renaissance over the last years, after the demonstration that few-layer crystals exhibit high carrier mobility and a thickness-dependent bandgap. Black phosphorus is also known to be a superconductor under high pressure exceeding 10 GPa. The superconductivity is due to a structural transformation into another allotrope and accompanied by a se...
